North Korea is considered the most closed and secretive country in the world. For tourists, entering the country is extremely difficult — and once inside, every step is closely monitored. Even a simple walk from a hotel room to breakfast is accompanied by a government guide.
Eric Lafforgue is a photographer and traveler known for capturing real life as it is. During his visits to North Korea, he managed to take photos that revealed far more about the country than officials wanted the world to see. These images showed everyday moments that contradicted the carefully controlled narrative presented by the authorities.
The government was not pleased.
As a result, Eric Lafforgue was permanently banned from ever returning to North Korea.
